If maintaining a high level of personal fitness is important to you then getting a good nights sleep on a consistent basis should be pretty high on your priority list…

Research and studies have shown that people who sleep well perform better and have quicker reaction times then those who sleep less then the average recommended 6-7 hours per night.

And that’s just for sedentary folks…

Folks like you and me who work out at the gym or maintain home fitness programs need sleep that much more because when we sleep our body’s are recovering from whatever workouts we’ve put them through.

If you’ve been reading this Blog for any length of time then you know how important I think working out with weights is to your personal fitness… well all of your hard work in the gym or in your home fitness program will be completely for not if you don’t get adequate sleep.

Sleep (recovery) is only 1/3 of the personal fitness puzzle and you need all three aspects of the personal fitness puzzle in order to achieve a high level of personal fitness… Along with sleep/recovery you also need to exercise and have a good, clean diet.

Cut That Hour Long Cardio Marathon in Half

According to Fitness Rx for Men (Volume 5 Number 4, July 2007) those hour-long cardio sessions you’ve been forcing yourself through may not be as effective at burning fat as you think they are…

According to Fitness Rx, Japanese scientists have discovered that 2 30 minute moderate-intensity workouts separated by a 20 minute break are more effective then torturing yourself with 60 consecutive minutes of cardio.

You may be asking yourself what you’re supposed to do in those 20 minutes between your two cardio workouts and here’s the answer.

First of all, I take this workout outside and I combine with it a bit of interval training. My wife and I like to be outside and we like to go hiking on weekends and such so here’s what I do…

  • Head out for a hike
  • Jog for a moderate pace for 30 minutes
  • Walk for 20 minutes (I replace walking for taking a break to take advantage of interval training benefits as well)
  • finish up the workout by jogging (again at a moderate pace) for 30 minutes
  • Have a picnic and score major brownie points with the wife!

That’s it.

Whenever possible I try to mix in cardio workouts with leisurely activities such as hiking to take the “work” out of work out.

Sorry about that…

Can Running on a Treadmill Hurt Your Back?

The short answer is yes.

Running on a treadmill while flat shouldn’t cause you any back pain but running or walking on a treadmill may  cause some back pain if:

  1. you use the incline too early in your workout
  2. you use the incline for too long
  3. or you use an incline that is too steep

Of course you can avoid all of these scenarios by taking a walk outside. And with the weather getting so much nicer these days, who wouldn’t mind a nice leisurely walk outside over working out on a treadmill indoors?
